Paul E. Oakley, Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the Ethos Consortium, and Jacqueline Robinson, Music Director of the Charlotte Contemporary Ensemble will conduct a varied and exciting program of inspiring works by African-American composers and works from the African Diaspora. Traditional spirituals and gospel songs will be on the program along side classical art music by African-American composers. From a haunting setting of “Ave Maria” to the popular appeal of “The St. Louis Blues” and “Walk Him Up the Stairs” from the musical “Purlie,” there is something in this concert for every taste.
An honored guest choir, The Charlotte Contemporary Ensemble and a fine array of soloists, instrumentalists and actors will join the Ethos Chamber Singers for this exciting program which includes the area premiere of the cantata “Changed My Name” by Broadway composer Linda Twine. This cantata pays tribute to both Sojourner Truth and Harriet Tubman in words and music, making this event an evening of entertainment, inspiration and education for people of all ages.
Each Ethos event is presented as a dedicated fundraising event in partnership with a Charlotte area non-profit.
All proceeds from “The Colors of Africa-Sung in Black and White” concert will be presented to the Afro American Cultural Center.
